St Mary the Less is so hidden by shops and surrounding offices that many people are unaware of its existence! Only the tower and porch are visible from Queen Street, but what has become concealed is still a beautiful and unique 13th century medieval building. The church fell out of use in 1544 and has not been in the care of a mainstream denomination since. Instead it is privately owned and has been occasionally opened for visitors during Heritage Days, which is generally held for two weeks in September. I painted the church from an aerial view as it is not possible to see much of it from the ground. The surrounding buildings are made transparent and a friendly dragon (an ancient symbol associated with Norwich) wears its colours and offers it a protecting wing. Lost from view and from most people's minds, St Mary the Less is now somewhere unexpected to come across or to remember is even there!
